2015 Cabernet Franc
2015 was another challenging growing season; the vineyard was beset with a low rainfall for the fourth year in the row with a majority of the precipitation occurring in December 2014 and February 2015. The bud break of the vines was early but the canopy growth was slow due to the drought. Summer was warm with cool mornings and by mid-September we were experiencing heat spikes which is normal for California. We hand harvested our Cabernet Franc in the early morning on September 30th.
The grapes were de-stemmed, crushed, cold macerated for 24 hours and punched down throughout fermentation to extract as much flavor as possible. The wine was then pressed into barrels for malolactic fermentation and aged 20 months in French oak (25% new).
The fruit for our 2015 Cabernet Franc came from a hilldside slope on Bennet Vineyard in the Coombsville AVA. The wine has a dark color and a highly aromatic nose featuring earth, plum and a hint of toast. The palate is rich, round and dense with soft tannins and a long unsweetened dark chocolate finish. While this wine drinks beautifully now it will continue to improve over the next decade.
