2012 Pinot Noir
Coquerel’s 2012 Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir is bright, forward, fruity and elegant. The aromatics and flavors have a spicy “blue” quality to them that implies purity and youth. The moderate alcohol level, firm acid and low pH ensure a mouthfeel that is brisk, lively and satisfying. Balanced tannins and dash of oak in the finish provide structure, length and an ability to pair perfectly with a wide range of foods.
The 2012 season started with a dryer-than-average winter when compared to the previous two years. The last notable rain occurred in April and no frost after bud break was recorded. The fruit set was excellent and consequently we had an abundant crop. This was quite welcome after the extremely low yields of the 2011 vintage. Some thinning was done around veraison to balance the crop load on select vines. The summer was warm, but no heat spikes were recorded. Cool mornings and evenings towards the end of the growing season allowed the fruit to mature properly.
While our focus will always be Napa Valley, we have been producing a small amount of Pinot Noir from Sonoma County since 2011. This 2012 comes from the Sonoma Coast AVA, a broad band of land that stretches from the Pacific Ocean in the west to the San Pablo Bay in the southeast. As with all of our wines, our winemaking techniques are tailored to emphasize and preserve the essential character of the fruit.
