2012 Le Petit Coquerel Sauvignon Blanc
90 Points & Editor's Choice - Wine Enthusiast Magazine
The 2012 Le Petit Coquerel is a pure expression of Sauvignon Blanc. It has a nose of gooseberry and grapefruit. The wine mouth feel is crisp and bright with a creamy round mid palate followed by a long finish of exotic fruit, lychee, and papaya. The wine is delicious to enjoy alone or with light fare such as seafood, sushi, cheeses, mild curries or any Asian cuisine.
The 2012 season started with a dryer-than-average winter when compared to the previous two years. The last notable rain occurred in April and no frost after bud break was recorded. The fruit set was excellent and consequently we had an abundant crop. This was quite welcome after the extremely low yields of the 2011 vintage. Some thinning was done around veraison to balance the crop load on select vines. The summer was warm, but no heat spikes were recorded. Cool mornings and evenings towards the end of the growing season allowed the fruit to mature properly.
Half of the fruit for our 2012 came from our estate vineyard in Calistoga. The other half came from an organic, dry-farmed vineyard in Yountville that was planted in 1978. Both sites were harvested on September 10 in the early morning hours to protect the integrity of the fruit. Both lots were fermented in stainless steel barrels and tanks and aged for seven months sur lie with a weekly batonnage. The wine was bottled in May 2013.
